Every level featuring the Flood becomes a Survival Horror experience with the most effective levels being “The Library” in Halo: CE and “High Charity” in Halo 2 where the players witness the gradual degradation of the entire city as the Flood overwhelmed the Covenant. Even after the first game they become a consistent source of suspense throughout the first trilogy. The introduction and engagement of the Flood was effective at changing the tone, atmosphere, and experience in Halo: Combat Evolved. Every encounter against the Flood becomes a struggle to make it to the next checkpoint while using ammunition wisely since the player can’t completely eliminate them. The danger escalates when the Flood start possessing combat forms with weapons, making them as dangerous as the weapons they wield. Players of the campaign now focus on navigating out of infested areas while conserving ammo and keeping the Flood away. Their awakening changed the course of the story, turning the action packed game into a Survival Horror. The Flood are indiscriminate in their infestation, with both humans and Covenant being equal targets for them. The threat of the Flood is so great that firing the Halo array wipes out all sentient life in the galaxy in order to starve them.
The first phase of their attack were the spores, followed with infection forms that violently attach themselves to their hosts. The more they consume, the more powerful and intelligent they become. The Flood are an intergalactic race of parasites that consume and assimilate all sentient life in their path.
In a found footage like style through the helmet, Master Chief observed the horrifying reveal of the Flood, the greatest threat in the Halo franchise. Master Chief found a discarded marine helmet with footage linked to it that’ll unveil what happened.
As Master Chief goes deeper in the facility there were shattered containers, blast marks and blood along the walls while green-yellow fluid dripped around the wrecked areas. The sense of dread was felt first with the soundtrack choice to no challenging combat sequences throughout the beginning of the level. No other marines are present and the single marine seen alive shoots at Master Chief in a delirious panic, traumatized by what he saw. The only Covenant units in the level were fleeing grunts and jackals, along with hidden figures that darted around in the misty swamp. There were signs and a battle and the brutal aftermath in the zone. Up to this point, the Covenant were built up as the main threat in the game, and now they’re afraid of something worse.Īt the introduction of “343 Guilty Spark”, Master Chief entered the area that Captain Keyes and his marine escort went to. According to Cortana, the Covenant found something buried in Halo that overwhelmed them, forcing them to quarantine as much as possible. What she discovered horrified her so badly that she sent Master Chief to desperately stop Captain Keyes from opening a supposed weapon cache. Then, the tone of the game changed dramatically after the end of the level “Assault on the Control Room”.Īfter defeating the Covenant guarding Halo’s Control Room, Master Chief put Cortana into the terminal to gain information on the ring.

The main setting of this action-packed game is a massive ring shaped space installation called Halo.įor the first half of Halo: Combat Evolved, fighting the Covenant and completing missions against them was the game play loop that players got familiar with, keeping to the FPS action the series is known for.
