Hunters should be a lot more concerned about how their broadhead flies and if it will hit the spot they are shooting at. On the other hand, a #2 pencil through both lungs will get it done. The best broadhead on the market won't do the job if you don't put it where it's supposed to go. My point is that shot placement is a lot more critical than broadhead choice. Guess what again - the wound scar is never in the "right behind the shoulder, double lung" spot! More often than not, it'll be up in the "no man's land" area between the top of the lungs and the spine. Many times we'll see a deer later in the season that was shot and lost by a hunter earlier. Well guess what - if you double lung them, they don't go far and we find them!

Probably because we put a lot of effort into finding them.Īlmost without fail if a hunter loses a deer, they swear it was a perfect double lung shot. Fixed blade, mechanical, cut on contact, even those goofy looking wire things.įortunately we lose very few deer out there. Being a day lease operation you can imagine that we see an assortment of broadheads. We allow hunters to use their choice of broadheads at BAO. Heck, it's hard enough to keep them closed in my quiver. Even at that, it looks to have a legal cut, equal to a lot of small 2 blade cuts. Maybe the guy used it to practice with and jammed the heads back and still used it. This hole may not be 3X as big, but it's not far off. For my bucks of a lifetime, I WANT to cause the most trauma I can. One dropped in sight and the other crashed within earshot. One with a 3 blade rage and one with a 2. I killed two 150+ bucks in San Angelo this past week. Maybe that extra cut gets one more vessel and makes up for what the small cut couldn't do. The first thing I thought was "that's the kind of shot where I WANT a big cut". All you have to do is look at the deer Les shot this year with a small fixed head. Never, not once, have I ever wished I had shot a smaller cut head. I have probably killed 100 deer with my bow and who knows how many other critters. I have conditions where I have gotten to kill way more than my share of animals. I started with vortex, moved to Hammerheads when they came out, and now have added the Rages. We'd see the deer later and see the wound and wonder what happened. I was in on too many unexplained unrecovered deer with fixed heads on apparantly good shots and was looking to cut that down. I have seen too many animals here shot with the Rage that Ray Charles could find if he were alive lol. I here all kinds of stories at the shop and thought I would share with you guys. Īgain I know there are some really good hunters here like Tooth Doc that swear by expandables. Where have we heard this before ? Please.

The guy who shot the deer is probably swearing he double lunged the deer and cussing Rage to this day. There was no part of the arrow attached as if it came unscrewed and worked its way out. The blades were slightly bent but not deployed. Cory told his father whom is a guide on the place that he dug the blade out of the deer. The blade traveled all the way through to where the tip of the Rage was sticking out of the hide ( 2nd photo ) on opposite side of the buck. You will see where the arrow entered the deer high by Cory's left hand. Ī buddy of mines son shot this deer recently in Indiana during the muzzle loader season. The commercial claims the rage must open on entry but this two blade model obviously didn't. Rage happens to be one of the better expandables out there from what I have seen in past years. The point being made here is even a Rage has a kink in its armor. I have killed many turkeys with them myself. I know mechanical heads have their place in archery. Let me start off by saying this thread is not intended to bash Rage heads.
